Artist Statement

My writing is deeply informed by my being Black and woman and southern. I am a writer whose fiction and nonfiction work is grounded in history, culture and research, with the South serving as the foundation. Through these lenses I create stories that engage and inform; stories that provide a gathering space for those who live in the moments that have gone unnoticed or may be forgotten; and stories that illuminate life in the south - the culture, the people, and the history.

My job is to document the present for future readers and to spark conversations on home, identity, family, love, and what it means to exist in this world. I am a product of Louisiana and Georgia and everything I create is born from my experiences in these spaces. I write so we can see pieces of ourselves in the past, present, and future.
